Will Flexco Pull-Out Steps Work for You?

Pull-out steps are typically installed on travel trailers. The Flexco pull-out steps from Stromberg Carlson are easy to install and fold up underneath the camper for simple storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Mounting Bracket Stromberg

The Lippert pull-out steps attach to the underside of the camper chassis, directly beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available underneath your camper that lines up with the door frame, and measure the width and depth. You will need a mounting space that is at least 28-1/8" wide and 12" deep.

If it turns out you have more or less space beneath your doorway, there are other step assemblies available with bracket sizes ranging from 21-1/16" wide to 28-1/4" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

Outriggers for RV Steps

Outriggers - metal brackets that act as an extension (LC301704 - sold separately) - may be needed for installation depending on the model of your original stairs. These provide extra length if the old steps are longer or wider than the new.

Once you know where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, that spot will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Entry Height Stromberg

To determine how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, plus 3" to 9" to account for the drop from the bottom steps to the ground. This measurement will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays mounting bracket width measurements in the first column and entry height measurements in the second column. The third column shows the corresponding part numbers. Use the mounting bracket width and entry height measurements you took to determine which part number will fit your RV. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

Mounting Bracket Width Entry Height Part Number
21-1/16" 14-1/2" - 17-1/2" SMFP-1120
23-5/8" 19" - 22" SMFP-2120
24-1/4" 10-1/2" - 13-1/2" SMFP-1220
25" 14-1/2" - 17-1/2" SMFP-1100
26" 19" - 22" SMFP-2100
27-1/8" 30" - 33" SMFP-3200L
28-1/8" 26" - 29" SMFP-3100
28-1/8" 34" - 37" SMFP-4400
28-1/4" 10-1/2" - 13-1/2" SMFP-1200

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Make sure the camper is level on flat ground
  2. Lift the steps into the mounting space and prop into place
  3. If needed, mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill

    -Set aside steps before drilling

  4. If needed, install the outriggers
  5. Align step mounting holes and secure in place with carriage bolts and flange lock nuts

-Make sure the bracket is backed up fully against the I-beam on the chassis

    -Hardware not included

  6. Tighten hardware until snug
  7. Make sure assembly is sitting square and level
  8. Torque the hardware tight

This product will be used on my truck camper with sits on a flatbed. Step width and depth looks very safe. Process of opening the 4 steps is easy. Reach from truck camper to ground will allow me to not need a stool to store somewhere else. With the 4 stepper folded away, I will be able to use my 2.5" hitch to pull a trailer if needed.

by:

replaced the steps with the exact same that the camper came with I only hope these will last better the original steps bent and came apart on our 2014 5th wheel I ordered the same steps in hopes that replacement would not be to difficult and they went on fairly simple

by:

I had my new 4 step for just over a year now. They still work and look great. What a difference they have made on getting into and out of the camper. The step from a 3 step to a four step is much better on the old legs . I wish I had gotten these sooner. Just a small amount of rust showing in a few spots but some spray paint will take care of that soon. Will buy again if and when these need replacing.

by:

Fast shipping. Made in the usa a plus.

by:

We installed these steps as replacement for the original which was damaged. They work just fine and are even better looking and with better non-slip surface. We are very pleased with them.

Great! Love them even more. They feel very safe and solid compared to the original.

by:

I received the ordered stairs and they arrived a few days later. Due to weather, I haven't gotten them installed as yet but my wife (a Shortie) is looking forward the the 4 entrance steps instead of the original 3 steps. (A couple of years ago I 'reversed the axles on the trailer which increase the entrance step height about 5" from the ground.) Hopefully she will be a 'Happy Camper' now that she can enter the trailer easier via the new 4 step installation. Thanks Etrailer for another great product! I may have rated the steps to 5 stairs if I already had the steps installed?

by:

Stairs replaced a 3 step with a 4 step. fit perfectly without any modifications.

by:

Great step has made it easier to get in the trailer. I don't understand why they don't put four step on trailers when new. Arrived on time easy to install in 30 minutes with help of a floor jack.

by:

Great service from your staff. Haven't unpacked the steps yet and plan to imnstall them tomorrow.

Great. Better having less rise in each step.

by:

I bought these steps a year ago, they work very well,an bolted right up to existing bolt holes!! They fold in an out very easily,my wife has no problem folding them in an out. I would recommend them if you need the additional step.

by:

Ordered these steps and 3 days later delivered to my front door. About 3/16" wider than the original Flexco triple steps I replaced on my Cedar Creek fifthwheel, but still fit. I did have to trim about 1.25" off the bottom of the existing mounting brackets under the entry door that these steps bolt on to, but not a big issue. Good sturdy steps.

by:

We have ordered from etrailer previously and always had great results. Same this time. Product was exactly as presented, shipping quick, and price was great!

by:

Looks like a great product, if you ignore the box it came in. I received the steps in a badly beaten box with many holes. The holes were where the edges of the steps broke the box sides. Cardboard not thick enough to prevent this problem. Good thing no mounting hardware was included, as it would have been lost in transit. I was warned by a friend of mine that received their steps the same way. I haven't mounted steps yet, but looks like they will mount very easy. I'm replacing a 3 step with this 4 step, because the bottom step on the 3 step is 12" off the ground.

by:

We love these steps. We has three steps before and adding one step puts less stress in my knees.

by:

Steps were delivered on time and installed them the same day but had to modify some for it to fit.

by:

We were able to remove and install the new ones in an hour..we couldn't be happier having the extra step. With an elderly dog it makes things easier for him. Adding the carpet wraps were a bonus.

by:

The four step stairs are great. Minor cutting with a saws all to clear the top stair slide out. The fitment was perfect and the quality of the product is great. Would recommend these steps to others

by:

Installation required some modification for replacing a three step version. The steps themselves required some modification to make them level. A few of the welds were not very good quality.

by:

No hassle ordering and products came fast. Just finished putting my new flexco quad steps in. Excilent products. Best pricing i could find and with free shipping it's a no brainer.

by:

I needed replacement rv steps. Product was easy to order and was delivered promptly. Good value.

by:

They've continued to work flawlessly on our campground's hayrack.

by:

Great product.Installation was simple.Madison H and etrailer were great to work with.

Going from a 3 step to a 4 step is going to reduce the ground clearance and that could end up being an issue depending on the terrain. The difference is width would seem to be off just enough to where you would not be able to mount the new steps in exactly the same holes as the old steps.
